Alias is a smart speaker on the top of another smart speaker

Due to the introduction of Amazon Echo and the Google Home, we are often listened to by smart speakers. So, now we know how it feels to have an always-on smart speaker at home.

By giving us all the home-organizing conveniences, these always-listening gadgets also cause privacy and cybersecurity concerns among people.

If you are worried about how big companies interfering in your private conversations, this little ‘’parasitic’’ gadget is exactly what you need.

Alias will be the middleman between you and your smart speaker

A new, clever gadget nicknamed Alias, launched by a new DIY open-source hardware project, is designed to protect your private conversations from the smart speakers by sitting on top of your smart speaker and blocking its microphones from listening in.

Due to the settings of smart-speaker blocker, you can use your personalized awake word to start requesting things as usual. Instead of using wake up words like ‘’Alexa’’, or ‘’Hey, Google’’, you can rename your smart speaker as you want it.

In other words, Alias is the privacy middleman between you and your smart speaker.

As project Alias heads, Bjørn Karmann and Tore Knudsen, explained, with Alias they wanted to see a different kind of future for smart technology that often comes with conditions that diminish our privacy. Alias is a smart speaker on the top of another smart speaker, and this is the kind of smart future the project heads are looking forward to.

The launch of Alias will partly solve the problem of security with Alexa and Google Home devices.

However, there are still other concerns that haven’t been addressed. The project is a one step forward in the right direction.

Just keep in mind that every successful command your actual smart speaker processes will still be stored in the cloud under your account.

Thus, project Alias is not the final solution.

What do you think about the future of technology? Do you think the final solution will be created by another project?
